Importance of Appropriate Cable Protection Highlighted

Date: 16th May 2022 Utilities & Civils

A Malaysian construction company has been fined almost £15,000 (RM80,000) for failing to take appropriate measures to protect underground cable from damage.

Free Malaysia Today reports that the firm accidentally damaged important fibre optic cables belonging to Telekom Malaysia Berhad in four separate locations. This had the effect of depriving many businesses and households access to a service which is now ensconced as a vital resource in the modern world.

The construction firm was charged RM20,000 (approximately £3,700) under Section 235 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1998 for each violation. It was reported that the company responsible paid the fine which had been issued.

This once again highlights the need for construction companies to take appropriate underground cable protection measures in any project which runs the risk of causing accidental damage to vital services.

Such incidents can of course result in significant reputational damage being caused to the company responsible, in addition to the obvious financial penalties which are possible.

Here at Centriforce, we manufacture a number of highly trusted cable protection products which have been proven to provide the necessary protection in a wide range of different applications.

One of our most popular and proven products in this range is Stokbord® Cover which is manufactured from 100% recycled plastic, but offers the necessary strength to prevent damage being caused by accidental strikes to underground cables and utility services.

Now also available within the Centriforce range is the Stokbord Drum, which provides all the strength of Stokbord® Cover but in a roll out format which reduces the time required by manual workers to apply the necessary protection. This increases workplace safety and has the potential to reduce expenditures for construction firms.

We also manufacture products which increase the visibility of such vital services to construction workers, with our brightly coloured Locata Detectable Tape and Locata detectable warning mesh. Both of these innovative products feature detectable tracer wires which enables workers to identify the presence of cables or utilities from above the surface.

If you require any more information about any of these products or would be interested in learning more about how Centriforce could help your business, then please feel free to get in touch with a member of our knowledgeable team at any time.
