Big Waters Nature Reserve covers an area of almost 50 hectares; it is jointly managed by Newcastle Council Ranger Service and the Northumberland Wildlife Trust. The site includes the lake, streams, ponds, marshland, grassland and woodland. There are facilities for walking, picnicking, fishing, bird watching and nature studies.
Working in conjunction with Newcastle Council Rangers Service and the Northumberland Wildlife Tust, Centriforce Products Ltd have supplied a 250m plastic boardwalk made from 250,000 recycled bottles.
The boardwalk replaces a timber construction and was chosen due to the products durability, longevity and low maintenance, making recycled plastic a much more cost effective solution over the long term.
