Borrowdale is the location of the National Trust's first acquisition in the Lake District. The Trust now protects 11,806 hectares (29,173 acres), including eleven farms, half of Derwentwater, the hamlet of Watendlath and sites with literary or historical interest.

Location: Cumbria

The Trust's main aim was to provide 'access for all' for less able individuals and family groups to a wetland habitat at the southern end of Derwentwater. For several years, the Trust has been working to improve the public access infrastructure within Borrowdale.

The current timber infrastructure was considered to be insufficient and needed replacing. A wide range of products were initially considered when determining which would be the most suitable. After rigorous testing and evaluation, the Trust decided that the recycled plastic profiles from Centriforce Products Ltd were the most cost effective solution over the long term.

The recycled material supplied by Centriforce has provided the Trust with a tough, durable, maintenance free boardwalk. The recycled plastic is manufactured to have a rough non slip surface, which blends well into the natural environment and provides a safer alternative to that of timber.
