The UK exports nearly 15 million tonnes of waste every year and of this approximately 0.8 million tonnes of waste plastic materials.  Centriforce aims to offer an alternative to this by manufacturing a range of high quality, second use materials from recycled plastics.  Our process capability allows us to offer fully closed-loop recycling for a wide range of waste producers, from large retail groups through construction, and on to local authorities.

Some Interesting Facts About Plastic Recycling

• The UK currently consumes around 5 million tonnes of plastic materials each year and its estimated 25% of plastics are being recycled or recovered with subsequent reduction in energy, landfill and oil requirements for new production.

• Household recycling is steadily rising and is now estimated at around 42% from government data.  This figure is 3x that of 10 years ago.

• Replacing plastic packaging with alternative materials would consume 582 million giga-joules more energy and create 43 million tones of additional CO2 emissions. The energy saved by using plastic is the equivalent to 101.3 million barrels of oil, and the CO2 saved is the equivalent to running 12.3 million cars each year.

• Figures from 2010 shows that around 281,000 tonnes of plastic bottles were collected and recycled by local authorities which amounts to around 48% of all bottles in the waste stream.  HDPE milk bottles represent about a third of this total, but around 72% of these are now recycled and this number is rising steadily. 

• Recycling a single plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60w lightbulb for up to 6 hours, and a typical 400 metre walkway would contain approximately 600,000 bottles. That same bottle would also save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes.   

• Producing one tonne of concrete generates almost a tonne of CO2 emissions, whilst every tonne of plastic recycled saves 1.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions which represents a significant saving and environmental benefit.
