Benefits of Plastics Recycling

Studies confirm that the recycling of plastic has one of the best carbon saving consequences of any of the major materials.

Recycling plastic has two major direct benefits;

  1. It reduces the amount of oil required to produce more plastic
  2. It takes a lightweight, bulky and non bio-degradable material out of our landfill sites.

Recycling a simple plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60w light bulb for up to 6 hours (RECOUP). This assessment takes into account all significant reserves required from collection in a bottle bank through to extrusion as a recycled plastic pellet or product.

The revenue available from selling plastic bottles still being land filled, is estimated to be around £27 million, excluding the saving in landfill costs.

According to the UK government (DEFRA) the 29% target of plastic recycling set for the UK in 2010, will save nearly 700,000 tonnes of Co2, the best carbon consequence of any of the major materials.

More and more major generators of plastic waste, such as major retailers, are now looking to use products made from their own waste, real closed loop recycling with all the benefits already outlined.

Centriforce Products, one of the first UK based plastic recyclers, and uniquely, with a process from waste to end products, remains at the forefront of progress in the industry, and a key supporter of the benefits of plastic recycling.
